Message ...and never crashed either. All 3 were daily drivers, driven through the winter. Once on the way from Chicago back to Detroit in my first '91, drove into a 13" snow storm and made it through. Even passed the snow plow/salt truck despite cars & semis in the ditch every where.

My secret? Follow these golden rules when it gets slick/icy/snowy:

1. Test the surface at slow speed. Get used to a tail-happy car so you don't freak when it's for real.

2. Upshift early; very early. Poor man's traction control.

3. When very icy, apply parking brake at partial engagement; keeps torque in control when getting off the line.

4. OK to speed up slightly going DOWN hill, as long as it's not a tight road or off camber too much. Gain momentum on down hills while keeping some space to the car in front of you (anticipate)

5. NEVER accelerate, or even maintain speed on any kind of UP hill. If you let a little momentum carry you up, lack of traction will not even be a factor! Start at the bottom of any grade at, say, 50 mph, knowing that at the top you'll be going only 35 mph. But you made it.

Follow these tips and you'll be golden.
